This view of Constantinople (Istanbul) is from the terrace of a house in Pera, now modern Beyoğlu, looking south across the entrance to the Golden Horn towards the old city of Stamboul, and to the left the Bosphorus and its Asian shore. It is situated on the Rue Yeni Tscharchi (now Yeni Çarşı Caddesi), which runs from the Grand Rue de Pera (Istiklal Caddesi), down the hill to Tophane. The large building in the right foreground is the French Embassy. To the extreme right is the Galata Tower. Preziosi's studio in Hamalbaşı sokak was nearby, on the northern side of the Grand Rue de Pera. The old man in traditional Ottoman costume is possibly a carpet dealer, judging by the pile of carpets to the right. He is accepting a cup of coffee from his black female servant or slave, while reclining under a vine-covered çardak or pergola, and enjoying his keyf, or calm pleasure in contemplation of the view.
