A pair of early 20th century scrimshaw walrus tusks
signed and dated Joe Kakavgook, 1901

the images document the rise of industry in Alaska after the crest of the 1890's Yukon gold rush. On the first tusk is a panorama of Nome, showing a vast build up of buildings stretching off into the horizon with Inuits hunting polar bears, seals and dog sledding. Signed below this image. On the reverse of the first tusk are three (3) vignettes including walrus on an ice floe; a view of Unalakleet, Alaska; and another of Dexter. The second tusk is engraved with a panorama view entitled Alaska 1901, and shows three business developments for N.A.T.Co., A.C.C.o., A.F.Co. On the reverse of the second tusk are four vignettes including views of Fort 9 Mila, Cirelecit 9, Ardreotskty, and another view of walrus on an ice flow. The root end on each end has been filled and drilled to affix a chain for hanging.
