A group of eight netsuke, three ojime, and a compass

19th century
The compass needle in a cylindrical housing set into a disc-shaped lacquer case inscribed with the Japanese names for the directions, on the underside with a Chinese inscription; the eight netsuke comprising: an ivory monkey climbing on rocks; an ivory study of a courtier, a Nio guardian and a man all seated in discussion, inscribed Kosai; a bone trick netsuke with a rat seated on a paper lantern, an ivory man with a large pack balanced on his back; an ivory figure of Gama Sennin standing with his toad companion on his shoulder; an ivory shishi on a rock; an ivory figure of a boy with a travelling pack on his shoulders; a bone study of a rat on a lotus root; the three ojime comprising: an ivory study of a puppy with a sandal, an ivory group of rats, and a coloured ivory figure of a coiled rat, signed Komin. The compass 11.3cm (4½in) diam. (12).
