A wood model of a wasp and nashi (pear)

Attributed to Sangetsu, Edo Period, mid 19th century
The insect feeding on the flesh of an over-ripe pear, the pear's skin covered with pimples in ukibori technique, two holes on the reverse forming the himotoshi; with added signature Sangetsu within an oval reserve. 5.1cm (2in).

The high quality of workmanship is representative of Sangetsu's work but the signature tablet appears to have been added later.
