A Satsuma ovoid vase

Meiji Period
Finely painted in enamels and gilt, the body with three rectangular panels, each enclosing a different scene: one depicting a Chinese legendary episode of Hyoko confronting a large bear who had escaped into the palace grounds, another of peasants with brushwood strapped to their backs walking along a winding path at the foot of a waterfall, the third of quail in flight and foraging for food amidst Autumnal plants, all reserved on a ground of formal floral motifs; the shoulder with a band of tea ceremony utensils, unsigned. 15.7cm (6 1/8in) high.
