A large gold lacquer rectangular ryoshibako (document box and cover)

Meiji Period
The flush-fitting lid sumptuously embellished in gold takamakie, kirikane, mura-nashiji and togidashi with an Autumnal view of the famous wooden Togetsukyo Bridge over a waterfall, set within forested Arashiyama shrouded in mist as a backdrop, the whole scene intersected by horizontal bands of clouds, the waterfall flowing into a lake, the shores of which are portrayed on the sides of the box, among which pine saplings and maple grow in profusion; the interior of rich nashiji, unsigned; with wood storage box. 17cm x 42.7cm x 32.5cm (6 5/8in x 16¾in x 12¾in).
