A large Negoro lacquer koban (raised tray)

Late Muromachi Period
Of circular form with everted rim, supported on a high, straight-sided foot, lacquered in black and red in Negoro style; with wood storage box. 49.2cm (19 3/8in) diam., 12.8cm (5in) high. (2).

Trays of this type were commonly used for the serving of meals in temples. A footed tray of this form would have been utilised to hold cups for tea, and stands.
