An ivory netsuke of a yama-inu (wild dog)

By Tomotada, Kyoto, late 18th century
Seated, its head turned slightly to the left as it leans forward protectively over its pup, which rolls on its back with excitement, the parent's musculature well defined and its tail passing forward between its legs, to form the himotoshi, signed in a rectangular reserve Tomotada. 5.1cm (2in).

Footnotes

象牙彫根付 山犬と仔犬 銘「友忠」 18世紀後期

A number of similar example of wild dogs by Tomotada are recorded, mostly with a captured crab, haunch of deer or tortoise, but it is rare to find an example of the dog playing with its own pup.
