A rare late 17th century French red tortoiseshell mantel clock

The caddy top surmounted by four small flambe finials and set to the corners with cast foliate mounts, flanked by a further four standard-size flambe finials over a pierced arcade, the front door with heavy gilt frame, the sides with long glazed panels on a cast ormolu base and squat bun feet, the 8 inch arched brass dial with twelve Roman cartouche numerals in blue enamel on a white ground and bordered by every minute numbered, the centre decorated with martial and scientific trophies, over a pair of applied cherubs centred by a signed enamel cartouche, the large rectangular movement united by tapering vase-shaped pillars with verge escapement, silk suspension and outside countwheel strike on the bell mounted above, signed in a bold copperplate hand along the lower edge 55cms (21.5ins) high.
