Maekawa Bunrei (1837-1917)

Shijo School, Meiji Period
A six-fold screen, decorated in ink, gofun and colour on paper, with a flock of tsugumi flying above pine trees growing beside a river, signed Bunrei with seal Bunrei no in. 106cm x 276cm (41¾in x 108¾in).

Born in Kyoto, Maekawa Bunrei, studied Shijo-school painting under his father Maekawa Gorei, who was a pupil of Matsumura Keibun (1779-1843).
