Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-1889)

Meiji Period
Kakejiku, in ink, urushi and colour on silk, depicting possibly Chikamatsu Monzaemon in the foreground, wearing a sword and carrying a gourd filled with sake over his shoulder suspended from a cherry branch, behind him five wakashu Kabuki actors enacting different roles, signed Seisei Kyosai with two seals Nyoku Kyosai and tsubo seal Kyosai; with wood storage box. 117cm x 40½cm (46in x 16in).
