Tosa School, Edo Period, mid 18th century
A pair of six-fold screens finely painted in ink, colour, moriage and gold ink on gold paper with the episodes of an early romance, Genji Monogatari (The Tales of Prince Genji), indoor and outdoor scenes are viewed from above and separated from each other by conventional gold clouds, the first screen depicting twelve images from top right to bottom left, the chapters include: Kiritsubo, Yugiri, Utsusemi and Ukifune; the second screen representing ten scenes from chapters such as Akashi, Wakaba and Miotsukushi; unsigned. Each screen approx. 152cm x 343cm (59 7/8in x 135in). (2).
