An early illuminated Qu'ran
Timurid Persia or Ottoman Turkey, second half of 15th Century

Arabic manuscript on paper, 299 leaves, lacking first illuminated folio incorporating surat al-Fatiha, 15 lines to the page written in elegant muhaqqaq script in black ink with diacritics and vowel points in black and red, gold dots between verses, inner margins ruled in blue and gold, wide outer margins with panels containing juz numbers written in thuluth in gold, sura headings written in thuluth script in gold, one illuminated page incorporating the opening verses of surat al-Baqarah, edges frayed and crudely repaired affecting text towards end, waterstaining, browned, later brown morocco with borders tooled in blind, with flap, slightly worn
165 x 125 mm.

The illumination of this manuscript compares closely with a Qur'an in the Khalili Collection, Iran or Turkey, circa 1450-1500. See David James, After Timur, vol. III, Oxford 1992, no. 18, pp. 70-71.
