Footnotes

Provenance:
Acquired Paris, 1979.

Marble fountain finials of this type have variously been attributed to Fatimid Egypt, Syria and Ghaznavid Persia. Lion-form waterspouts are also a particular feature of Siculo-Arab art, representing a continuation of Classical Roman styles under Fatimid, and later Norman, rule in Sicily. For a very similar example, see Sotheby's, Arts of the Islamic World, 13th October 2004, lot 36
