A Mughal gem-set jade-hilted Crutch Dagger
North West India, 18th Century and later

with narrow double-edged, short blade, gold inlay decoration consisting of inscription-filled cartouches, the T-shaped hilt carved with foliate decoration, the terminals curled inwards, a narrow replacement darker jade at junction within two bands of inset rubies, the silver embossed scabbard with floral decoration, the top set with rubies and emeralds, one garnet, the bottom set with rubies, a carved jade terminal

Footnotes

The inscriptions are Turkish verses. Crutches of this type were used by rulers whilst holding court and by mystics, both Hindu and Muslim, during meditation. The blade concealed within is for the owner's personal safety.
