Footnotes
Although Carmichael did visit Holland in the early 1830s and continued to paint Dutch scenes all his working life, Diana Villar believes this is a British scene and the main vessel is a visiting Dutch yacht, causing a lot of interest for the local British fishermen. The date of 1848 would fit in with Carmichael's move to London in 1846 after which time he would have had more chance to paint in the area of the Thames estuary .
We would like to thank Diana Villar for her help in cataloguing this lot.
