John Ward of Hull (British, 1798-1849)

A frigate shortening sail as she runs into port
oil on panel signed 'J.Ward' (lower left)
22.8 x 30.5cm. (9 x 12in.)

Footnotes

Arthur Credland believes the style of this picture dates it to the 1820s and that an individual ship's portrait is an unusual subject for Ward to paint on one of these small panels; usually they show generalised views of shipping on the Humber or in the North Sea.

We would like to thank Arthur Credland, Keeper of Maritime History, Ferens Art Gallery, Kingston-upon-Hull, for his help in cataloguing this lot.
