Footnotes
The lack of a date let alone any owners’ house or signal flags makes the identification of this vessel very difficult, particularly when her rig is unclear. With her mizzen topmast down, she could be either a full-rigged ship or a barque although the latter is more likely. It is therefore noteworthy that in E.H.H. Archibald, The Dictionary of Sea Painters, Antique Collectors' Club, Woodbridge, 3rd edition, 2000, page 190, a painting by this artist of A barque amongst icebergs off Cape Horn is recorded as being in the collection of the San Francisco Maritime Museum to which the work offered here may be related.
