Provenance :
Mrs. Lawrence.
John Munday believes this picture is no. 46/35 (see John Munday, E.W.Cooke, Antique Collectors' Club, Woodbridge, 1996, page 342) and that as it is inscribed 'ARA' this would date it to 1851 or later.
He comments: 'Cooke went on his first Italian painting trip equipped with a form of oil-paper sketching block and he might use only part of a sheet, getting two subjects on one sheet. On return to London he would have his colourman/framer stick his sketches - which were in fact on-the-spot paintings - either onto panels or canvases. It was a handy way of travelling light and his larger size of paper block - 11 x 17ins. is often met with'.
We would like to thank John Munday for his help in cataloguing this lot.
