Provenance:
The Parker Gallery.
Built at Bottomley’s Yard at Rotherhithe, the ‘Ranger’ was ordered for the Admiralty-managed postal packet service and initially carried no more than 3 guns. Launched on the Thames on 25th July 1835 but completed at Sheerness that December at a total cost of £8,881, she was measured at 358 tons and was 95 feet in length with a 30 foot beam. Re-rigged as a brig-sloop in 1845, when her armament was increased to 16 guns, she completed a further sixteen years of service with the fleet until hulked as a church ship at Dublin in 1860. After seven years in this incongruous role, she was sold to John Good of Dublin, apparently for breaking, in 1867.
