Footnotes
Built at Sunderland in 1857, the iron barque ‘Hercules’ was registered at 393 tons gross (and net) and measured 122 feet in length with a 28 foot beam. Retaining Sunderland as her home port, she spent most of her career trading to South America although she also made occasional calls at various West Indian ports. Sold to German owners in 1880, she disappears from record in 1883, probably as a result of being renamed and re-registered by her new owners.
